Stem parts of a plant

Plants have several important stem parts, including:

  1. Node: The point on a stem where leaves, branches or flowers grow from.

  2. Internode: The space or segment between two nodes on a stem.

  3. Axil: The angle between the upper side of a leaf or a branch and the stem from which it arises.

  4. Bud: A small undeveloped shoot that can grow into a branch or a flower.

  5. Terminal bud: The bud at the end of a stem which controls the growth of the stem.

  6. Lateral bud: The bud on the side of the stem that can grow into a branch or a flower.

  7. Bark: The protective outer layer of a stem.

  8. Phloem: The tissue in a stem that transports sugars and other organic compounds from the leaves to the rest of the plant.

  9. Xylem: The tissue in a stem that transports water and minerals from the roots to the rest of the plant.

  10. Cambium: The tissue in a stem that produces new phloem and xylem cells for growth.
